OVERVIEW

This project was my first Freelance website. I used to work with James at Best Buy, and the word got out that I was working on a web development career. He approached me and asked me if I would build him a website for his company “JH Brands”.

James is a motivational speaker for Foster Care Children, and holds the Martial Arts World Champion title. This site contains a lot of media such as videos, newspaper articles, podcasts and testimonials. Because of the high volume of content constantly in and out, WordPress was the perfect option for this build.

THE PROCESS

Due to my inexperience at the time, this site used a pre-made WordPress template from day one. When I first signed on for this job, James was on Squarespace, so I did a lot of custom CSS through that editor but it was extremely limiting. Eventually I convinced James to move over to WordPress.

He agreed and very soon we were on our way. I transferred him to a new host, and installed WordPress. Once that was in effect, he hand-picked a template that he liked.

THE CODE

Custom coding for this site is very limited, as the theme already had most of the structure and assets built in. That being said, there was still a lot of custom CSS to create the branding colors and fonts to pull the look out. Headline and content proximity were definitely an obstacle, so CSS was used to create nice, even spacing between the typography, and to tie sections together more evenly.
